LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER - TRAIL OF TEARS
2- Day Camping Float
30 Miles
Grand Tower, Illinois to Cape Girardeau, Missouri
On this trip we will start in the small Illinois town
of Grand
Tower. At the start of this trip we will go
across river to a small island called Tower
Rock.
Tower Rock was carved out by the Mississippi River and
has been designated a national historical site. The
mainland
offers a scenic view of Tower Rock although the island
itself is inaccessible except by boat.
After we explore Tower Rock we will float on down the
river past where the Big Muddy River enters the Mississippi. As
we float farther down we start entering the Trail
of Tears, the area where
The Cherokee nation crossed the river in the winter
of 1838-1839 during the forced march
from their native homelands in northwestern
Georgia to
the Oklahoma territories. We will camp along the river near where
the Trail of Tears
State Park is located.
The next morning we will break camp, load the canoes,
and then take a few moments to remember the unforgettable
tragedy that took place here
generations
ago.
Afterwards we will float on down to complete our trip at the river
city of Cape
Girardeau. A River City Outfitters canoe trip through
this part of America’s
early history will leave you with a sense of appreciation and respect
for the
great pain
and suffering
experienced by both the native Americans who were forced to leave
their native homelands and
the early American settlers who were trying to build a new life for
themselves and their families.
Come join us on a canoe trip thru this page of our nations history!
