As the mighty Mississippi River carves its way toward
the Gulf of Mexico, it not only carries one pound of silt
with every 500 gallons of water, it also carries with it
a sense of great adventure, mystique and respect. The mighty
Mississippi is truly one of our nations grandest rivers.
Dividing our country in half, it has for generations served
as the nations backbone. This truly world class river deserves
our respect and attention.
Canoeing the Mississippi River can be a challenging, rewarding
and awesome experience. It demands your full attention
and respect at all times. River traffic is an ever present
danger, but very easy to avoid and navigate
around. Watching a tug boat with a tow of barges navigate
the river is an exciting and thrilling experience, especially
from the seat of a canoe. At first sighting, a tow heading
in your direction is usually two or three miles
away. At that distance, you still have
20 to 30 minutes to relocate to a more
comfortable location on the river. Being aware of traffic
on the river is always important, but it
should
never
prevent you from safely experiencing this great river.

Come join us as we explore one of America’s greatest
rivers. We will stop along the way to explore the historical
cities and towns on the river. The restaurants, cafes
and local pubs are great places to stop, have lunch, enjoy
dinner or just relax for a few moments. Let life
and the river flow gently by as you explore the river
in one of
our custom River Explorers. Our custom canoes
let you enjoy the freedom to navigate the main channel
of the river or take a side trip to explore some of
the more
shallow
backwater sloughs and bayous. Only a River City Outfitters River
Explorer will
allow you to explore in 12 inches or 12 feet of water,
bringing Mother Nature close enough to touch!
The Upper Mississippi River
The upper Mississippi River has some
very unique and breathtaking areas. From the crystal
clear waters
of the Minnesota lake regions to the vast waterfowl wetlands
of Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri. The upper Mississippi
is controlled by series of lock and dams. From Minnesota
to St. Louis the 27 lock & dams that control this
river has created some beautiful and interesting places
to explore.
Locking thru one of these locks in a canoe is an exciting
and awesome experience in itself. To read a complete
description of our upper Mississippi River trips, visit
the Upper
Mississippi River Trips page.
The Lower Mississippi River
The lower Mississippi River is quite different
from the upper part of the river. From St. Louis to the
Gulf of Mexico, the river runs wild and unobstructed -
free from the lock and dams that control the upper sections.
The river grows wider and deeper as it races toward the
gulf (On a recent trip near Caruthersville, MO my depth
gauge read 102ft). To read a complete description of our
lower Mississippi River trips, visit the Lower
Mississippi River Trips page.
